Orange County Community College Roundup : OCC Sweeps to Cross-Country Wins

The Orange Coast College women’s cross-country team placed seven runners in the top 10 to win an Orange Empire Conference cross-country tri-meet Friday at Irvine Park.

Maura Daly of Saddleback College won the three-mile race in 20 minutes 29 seconds. Daly was followed by six Orange Coast women: Candice Hansen (20:53), Debbie Lies (21:04), Delinda Patino (21:04), Loi Curl (21:09), Deanna Feser (21:15) and Lisa Peters (21:48).

The Pirates (5-0) defeated Riverside, 15-50, and Saddleback, 20-42.

In the men’s race, Art Garza of Rancho Santiago set a course record (21:43) to lead the Dons (5-0) to victories over Riverside, 15-49, and Saddleback, 21-40, at Irvine Park.

Rancho Santiago was helped by Jim Sorensen (second, 21:49) and Carlos Nava (seventh, 22:09).

In Orange Empire Conference men’s soccer:

Rancho Santiago 14, Victor Valley 0--Jose Guerrero and Long Yang had three goals each to lead Rancho Santiago (11-3-1, 8-2-1), which is a half-game out of first place behind Riverside, at home.

In South Coast Conference men’s soccer:

Golden West 1, Fullerton 1--Steve Teran scored for Fullerton and Wabel Alsowaigh scored for the Rustlers early in the first half at Golden West. Goalkeeper Erik Smith had eight saves for Golden West (12-1-4, 3-1-2) and Jeff McCaughin had 16 saves for Fullerton.

In South Coast Conference women’s soccer:

Orange Coast 2, Golden West 1--Renee Barteski’s goal with a little more than five minutes left broke a 1-1 tie as the Pirates won at home.

Golden West was a player short when a starter was injured in the first half and unable to continue. The Rustlers had no reserves. Still, Golden West took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Shannon Augustine in the first half.

OCC (11-1-1, 9-1-1) tied the score on a goal by Mitch Nadon in the second half. She was assisted by Brande Craig. Nadon had an assist on the winning goal also. OCC, which defeated El Camino Tuesday to take over first place, has a one-point lead with four matches left.

In Orange Empire Conference water polo:

Saddleback 14, San Diego Mesa 12--Denny Bethke had five goals, Bill Egan four and Keith Shore three to lead Saddleback, which clinched at least a tie for the conference title with two matches left at home. Saddleback is 20-3 overall, 12-0 in conference and ranked third in the Southern California coaches’ poll.

San Diego Mesa is 19-10 and 9-3.

Cypress 11, Grossmont 7--Terry Kimberling, a freshman from Cypress High School, had a career-high seven goals for Cypress (7-18, 3-8), which won at home. Dan Walsh added two goals for Cypress.

In Orange Empire Conference volleyball:

Rancho Santiago 3, Cypress 1--Mona Kort had 15 kills and Denise Dawson had 4 aces for Rancho Santiago, which won at home, 15-8, 15-13, 9-15, 15-7.

Orange Coast 3, Saddleback 0--Karen Nickel had 8 kills and 7 digs and Jennifer Deiley had 10 kills and 5 aces for OCC (5-4, 3-1) at home. Saddleback is 3-7 and 1-3.
