15-Year-Old Held in Stabbing of Mother at Home

A Glendale library aide was attacked by her son and stabbed more than 10 times Monday afternoon during an argument at their home, police said.

Elaine Edelman, 47, who works at Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School in Glendale, was stabbed 10 to 13 times on her face, chest and hand during the dispute at 4:45 p.m. Monday, said Glendale Police Department spokesman Christopher Loop. The Edelmans live in the 3800 block of San Augustine Drive.

Edelman told police that her 15-year-old son became angry during an argument about a driver’s education class and repeatedly stabbed her with two knives as she ran through the house screaming for help.

When Edelman ran outside, pursued by her son, a passing motorist, Michael Rueff, 45, of La Canada Flintridge, stopped to help her. Rueff told police that the teen-ager stabbed his mother three times before Rueff was able to grab a hammer from his truck and knock the knives out of the boy’s hand.

A neighbor, Jeffrey Maljian, 20, held the teen-ager at gunpoint until authorities arrived, Loop said.

Edelman was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, where she was listed Wednesday in fair and stable condition, said spokeswoman Maggie McPhillips.

Edelman’s son was taken to Los Angeles County Medical Center, where he was treated for cuts to his hands. He later was taken to Eastlake Juvenile Hall.

One count of attempted murder was filed Wednesday morning against the teen-ager in Pasadena Superior Court.
