Deranja’s Four Touchdowns Runs Lead Notre Dame to 42-12 Upset

Notre Dame High, behind a 116-yard and four-touchdown performance by Jere Deranja, stunned St. John Bosco with a surprising 42-12, lopsided win in a Del Rey League game Friday night at Notre Dame.

The Knights (4-5 overall and 1-3 in league) scored 14 points in each of the first two quarters to build a 28-6 halftime lead.

Matt McElreath had a 29-yard touchdown run to open the scoring for Notre Dame. Deranja then scored twice on runs of 23 and 3 yards.

Notre Dame defensive end Steve Hamilton recovered a Jim Niccoli fumble at the Notre Dame 32 to set up Deranja’s 23-yard touchdown. Deranja, a senior running back, scored on a 14-yard run in the third quarter to give Notre Dame a 35-6 lead. He accounted for Notre Dame’s final touchdown on a two-yard run in the fourth period.

Morgan Shepherd had given Notre Dame a 28-0 lead in the second quarter when he teamed with Bill Brewer on a 32-yard scoring pass play.

St. John Bosco (5-3-1, 1-2-1) amassed 234 total yards but turned the ball over three times.

Shepherd completed 9 of 13 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown while gaining 40 yards in five carries. Bill Brewer had five receptions for 88 yards and a touchdown.
