Healthy Bausley Scores 5 Times in Valley Rout

Dondre Bausley, finally healthy after nursing a bruised thigh for the past several weeks, rushed for 329 yards and five touchdowns to lead Valley College over Victor Valley, 68-3, Saturday night at Valley College.

Bausley has rushed for 2,134 yards in two years at Valley, breaking Bob Barber’s career rushing record set in the 1970 and 1971 seasons. Barber rushed for 1,964 yards.

“It feels real good,” said Bausley, who has 32 touchdowns in his college career, also a school record. “I had a couple of goals coming into the season, and I’m glad I did it.”

But while Bausley basked in his accomplishments, quarterback Barry Hanks played only one series and finished the game 63 yards short of the Monarchs’ career passing yardage record. Valley Coach Chuck Ferrero started freshman Rusty Wilson in place of Hanks, who struggled in Valley’s previous two games, both Southern California Conference losses.

Ferrero said afterward that he discovered how close Hanks was to the record at halftime, but by then it was too late.

“I know,” Ferrero said when asked. “But you can’t throw when it’s 55-3.”

Valley threw just three passes in the second half.

With Bausley, the Monarchs didn’t need to pass.

“He’s an unbelievable player,” Ferrero said. “If we ever played him for four quarters, you know what would happen? He never plays four quarters.”

Valley scored six touchdowns on as many possessions in the second half. Greg Hodges scored three times, on runs of 3, 16 and 27 yards. The sophomore had 105 yards on eight carries, all while spelling Bausley after intermission.

Valley finished the regular season 8-2 overall, 7-2 in conference play. It was the Monarchs’ best season since they posted the same record in 1985. Victor Valley finished 0-10, 0-9 in conference play. The 65-point margin of victory was the largest in Valley’s history. Valley’s season record, however, probably will not be good enough to warrant a postseason bid.

Valley led at halftime, 25-3, behind Bausley’s 127 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries.

The first, a one-yard dive that finished a 55-yard drive by the Monarchs, gave Valley a 7-0 lead with 10:27 left in the first quarter.

Bausley broke free again early in the second quarter for a 68-yard touchdown. Robert Padden missed the point-after, and Valley led, 13-0.
