Daffron of Golden West Is South Coast MVP

Barrie Daffron, a setter for the Golden West College volleyball team, was voted the most valuable player of the South Coast Conference by a vote of the conference coaches Tuesday.

Daffron was an All-South Coast Conference and all-state outside hitter last season before she switched to setter this season. She averaged 9.4 assists per game this season.

Laura Phillips (outside hitter), Dionne Powers (middle blocker) and Kim Gray (outside hitter), all of Golden West, also were selected to the first team.

Golden West (23-1 overall and 12-0 in conference) enters the state playoffs Tuesday as the top-seeded team.

Christie Hooper (middle blocker) and Janene Caldwell (outside hitter) of Golden West and Hedi Shikuma (setter) and Kimari Kubota (middle blocker) of Fullerton were selected to the second team.

Michelle Richard, an outside hitter from conference champion Citrus, was voted the most valuable player of the Orange Empire Conference by a vote of the coaches Tuesday.

Jennifer Deiley (outside hitter), Karen Nichel (outside hitter) and Jody Fee (middle blocker), all from Orange Coast, also were named to the first team.
