Two Sewage Spills Shut Down Beaches

Share

About 8,000 gallons of raw sewage poured into the Pacific at Ocean Beach and La Jolla over the last few days, Ken Calvert, a spokesman for the County Health Services Department, said Friday.

A small leak in a sewer main at Mission Center Road and Murray Ridge Road in Mission Valley forced about 6,000 gallons of sewage into the San Diego River since Wednesday. The leak was repaired Friday morning, according to Calvert.

The Dog Beach area of Ocean Beach--where the San Diego River flows into the ocean--will remain posted with warning signs until tests confirm that the water is once again safe for swimming and other activities, Calvert said.

Another spill caused by roots and rocks blocking a line Friday in the 7000 block of Country Club Lane in La Jolla poured about 1,800 gallons of raw sewage into the ocean near Prospect Street and Coast Boulevard. The leak was repaired several hours later, Calvert said.

Warning signs posted along the beach surrounding the storm drain are expected to remain until sometime next week, Calvert said.
