Woodbridge Eliminates Paso Robles

Quarterback Derrick Odum scored two touchdowns to lead Woodbridge High School to a 33-25 victory over Paso Robles in a Desert-Mountain Conference quarterfinal playoff game Friday night at Irvine Stadium.

Odum, normally a wide receiver and defensive back, stepped in for the regular starting quarterback, Fred Schweer, who was sidelined with a bruised kidney. Odum completed 10 of 14 passes for 220 yards as the fourth-seeded Warriors (11-1) advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in the school’s history.

Woodbridge will meet Atascadero, a 42-18 winner over Bloomington, next Friday night.

Senior John Rios, who rushed for 111 yards in 23 carries, scored on a 1-yard touchdown run with 8:59 left in the game to tie the game at 25. Then, Keith Boothroyd, who had kicked two field goals, hit the point after to give Woodbridge the lead.

Woodbridge padded its lead to eight points on a 26-yard touchdown run by Rios with 4:26 remaining.

Paso Robles (8-4) got the ball back with 50 seconds remaining on its own 30, but the drive stalled at midfield and the Warriors took over on downs.

The Bearcats, the Los Padres League champions, took an early 7-0 lead when Jason Brown, who rushed for 116 yards in 10 carries, scored on a 55-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage.

Boothroyd’s 24-yard field goal with 4:51 remaining in the second quarter closed the gap to 7-3. The Warriors then moved ahead, 10-7, on a seven-yard touchdown run by Odum with 10:09 remaining in the second quarter.

Brown’s seven-yard run with 4:42 remaining in the second quarter put the Bearcats ahead, 13-10. However, the point after failed.

The Bearcats, who were able to convert just one of four point-after attempts, took a 19-10 lead with 1:07 left in the first half on Brown’s 36-yard touchdown run, but the Warriors closed the gap to 19-13 on Boothroyd’s 34-yard field goal with one second left before intermission.
