Fountain Valley Upsets Bishop Amat, 42-14 : Barons Win Eighth Straight; Lancers Lose Fourth Straight Quarterfinal Game

Bishop Amat High School took a perfect 11-0 record and a No. 3 ranking into Friday night’s game with Fountain Valley.

Perhaps, more important, the Lancers also took a three-year streak of losing in a Big Five Conference quarterfinal game.

The streak became four after Fountain Valley stunned the Lancers, 42-14, before a standing-room-only crowd of 4,500 at Bishop Amat. It was Fountain Valley’s eighth straight victory, after opening its season with four straight defeats.

Fountain Valley (8-4) used its big offensive line, the physical running of Courtney Dubar and the precision passing of David Henigan to thoroughly dominate the Bishop Amat defense.

Bishop Amat running back Mazio Royster scored less than two minutes into the game on a 30-yard run. Royster gained 64 yards in two plays to account for the Lancer offense on the drive.

The Barons took just four plays to retaliate, as Henigan threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Mike Maga. Dubar ran in the conversion to give Fountain Valley an 8-6 lead.

Each team scored again before the first quarter ended, with the Barons opening the game up in the second quarter. Fountain Valley drove 79 yards in 15 plays to start the quarter, with Dubar scoring on a one-yard run.

With just under two minutes left in the half, Henigan drove the Barons 64 yards, completing 5 of 6 passes. His seven-yard pass to Bob Koscich gave Fountain Valley a comfortable 28-13 halftime lead.

Bishop Amat started the second half by driving to the Fountain Valley 11-yard line. But on third and 10, quarterback J. R. Phillips was hit by defensive tackle Reza Mehdizadeh for a 21-yard loss, virtually finishing off the Lancers’ hope for a comeback.

Dubar finished with 119 yards and 2 touchdowns in 20 carries. Royster led Bishop Amat with 151 yards and a touchdown in 22 carries.

Fountain Valley advances to the Big Five semifinals, where it will meet Long Beach Wilson, which upset No. 3-seeded Loyola, 23-7.
