Brad Raulston scored two touchdowns and Brent Woodall rushed for 161 yards in 18 carries to lead second-seeded La Jolla High School to a 38-24 San Diego Section 2-A quarterfinal playoff win over Oceanside Friday night at Mesa College.

La Jolla (10-1), which has the county’s third-stingiest defense, held Oceanside (5-5-2) to 26 first-half yards and then watched as its offense, also ranked third in the county, piled up 24 unanswered points in the second and third quarters.

La Jolla will play the winner of tonight’s El Capitan-San Marcos in the semifinals next Friday.

La Jolla scored the first points of the night on a 27-yard field goal by sophomore Mike Wollager with 7:18 left in the first half. It was set up by a 52-yard run by Woodall on an off-tackle play that became very familiar to the Oceanside defense before the night was over.

Jerry Walker ran 27 yards on the same play five minutes later to set up a 3-yard touchdown run by John Tribolet. La Jolla led, 10-0, at the half.

La Jolla ran the off-tackle play through the strong side of the line, with 6-foot 1-inch, 250-pound fullback Eric Brown leading the way. Woodall, who is 6-4 and 220 pounds, had 140 of his yards on that play. All of Walker’s 42 yards came by running off tackle.

La Jolla scored three times in the third quarter. Tribolet passed 27 yards to Raulston, then Raulston ran a counter in from 3 yards. After Oceanside scored its first touchdown on a 12-yard pass from sophomore Jerry Garrett to Dwayne Wilson with 2:55 left in the third quarter, Walker ran in from 6 yards out for a 31-8 advantage.

Garrett, a 15-year-old, was playing in only his fourth game as a varsity quarterback. Garrett’s speed and strong arm had opened up the Oceanside offense since he became quarterback, but it took until Oceanside’s second series of the third quarter before Garrett became comfortable. Oceanside was trailing, 24-0, by then.

In the first half, Garrett was held to 1 completion in 6 pass attempts and 2 yards in 6 rushing attempts. He finished with 9 completions in 21 pass attempts for 149 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown pass to Rusty Ignaciak.
