THE PREPS : Girls’ Basketball Roundup : Davidson Scores 23 to Lead Esperanza Past Fullerton, 81-20

Esperanza High School opened its girls’ basketball season in convincing fashion, jumping out to a 32-6 lead in the first quarter, and eventually beating Fullerton, 81-20, in a nonleague game at Esperanza Tuesday.

Center Karin Davidson was almost perfect from the field, connecting on 10 of 12 shots for 23 points, before sitting down in the third quarter. Davidson also had eight rebounds and five steals. Guard Jayme English and forward Andrea Warmus each added 12 points for Esperanza.

In other nonleague games:

Fountain Valley 51, Capistrano Valley 49 (OT)--The Cougars, playing at home, led by five going into the fourth quarter, but Fountain Valley came back to take the lead. Capistrano Valley’s Gayle Kellenberger tied the score with a three-point shot with just two seconds remaining, sending the game into overtime. Guard Stacey Hasaka led the Barons with 14 points. Capistrano Valley, playing without forward Heather Schoeny or center Holly Anderson--both recuperating from injuries--was led by Shelley Zierhut with 18 points and 9 rebounds.

Katella 54, Kennedy 25--Junior forward Joni Easterly, the only Knight in double figures, scored 22 points, had 6 rebounds and 4 steals in the victory at Katella. The Knights had a team total of 11 steals.

Marina 71, Long Beach Wilson 45--Center Dawn Charroin and guard Deedee Stiger each scored 20 points for the Vikings at Marina. Charroin and Kathy Stuppy each had 9 rebounds and guard Alison Krasue had 11 assists.

In the first round of the Woodbridge-Irvine tournament:

Edison 50, Loara 45--Junior Krisden Tanabe, playing both forward and point guard, led the Chargers with 16 points and 13 rebounds, overcoming a strong first-quarter press by Loara. Wendy Sandsted added 15 points.

La Quinta 43, Savanna 27: Donna Gondringer had 20 points and 6 rebounds to lead the Aztecs (1-0) in a first-round game. La Quinta’s Amy Jalewalia contributed 9 points, 8 rebounds and 8 steals.
