The second-seeded Colts broke open a close game by outscoring North, 42-19, in the second half on the way to a first-round win in the Pacific Shores Tournament at Redondo.
Senior forwards Rodney Bowen and Stephen Smith led Carson, which will play Torrance at 4:30 p.m. today in the quarterfinals at Redondo. Bowen scored 21 points and Smith added 18.
Leading 44-39 at half time, Carson opened the second half with an 8-2 run and put the game on ice by outscoring North, 15-2, to start the fourth quarter. The lead had changed hands 11 times in a tight first half.
Guard Kikuo Nishi scored 15 points for North, which plays San Pedro at 3 p.m. today in the consolation quarterfinals at Redondo.
LEUZINGER 73 HARVARD 57
Guard Roger Thomas scored 25 points and 6-6 freshman Frank Willis had 8 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Olympians in a non-league season opener at Leuzinger.
The victory matched last season’s win total for Leuzinger, which was 1-19. Guard Reggie Hamilton added 11 points for the Olympians.
