High School Highlights : Beauchemin’s 18 Lead Alemany, 60-50

Jon Beauchemin overcame a dry shooting spell to score 18 points and lead Alemany to a 60-50 victory over Saugus in the consolation semifinals of the Simi Valley basketball tournament Thursday at Simi Valley.

The 6-foot, 2-inch junior guard missed six of his first seven shots but scored 16 points in the second half to hold off a late rally by Saugus, the defending Southern Section 3-A champion.

The Indians led by as many as six points early in the third quarter, but four free throws by Gene Duggan in a 14-second span gave Saugus its first lead, 35-33, with three minutes left in the third quarter. It was the Centurions’ first lead since they hit the first basket of the game.

Guard Sean Legaux made two more free throws to give Saugus a 37-33 lead. Beauchemin then scored nine points in a 15-4 run that buried Saugus. Beauchemin scored 31 points in the Indians’ 82-74 first-round loss to St. Anthony.

Alemany made 8 of 10 shots in the fourth quarter while Saugus made just 3 of 9 in the quarter and 18 of 46 in the game. The Centurions also turned the ball over five times in the final quarter.

Alemany’s Dave Berganio scored 18 points and Rick Bilek scored 10 points to lead Saugus (0-2).

In today’s semifinals, Santa Barbara plays Santa Clara at 6:30 p.m. and Simi Valley plays St. Anthony at 8 p.m.
