Prep Soccer Roundup : Oldham Leads Mater Dei Past Brea-Olinda, 5-0

Paul Oldham scored three goals to lead Mater Dei High School to a 5-0 win over Brea-Olinda in a nonleague boys’ soccer game Saturday at Brea-Olinda.

John Coggins and Doug West each scored a goal for the Monarchs (2-0), the top-ranked team in the Southern Section 4-A.

Goalies Mike Reis (one save) and Mike Ammann (three) combined to shut out the Wildcats, top-ranked in 2-A.

“They really took it to us today,” said Manny Toledo, Wildcat coach. “And I really congratulate the team. They are going to be one of the top teams in the (Southern Section) 4-A. We didn’t play like a No. 1 team today, but they did.”

Danny LaFrance had 14 saves for Brea-Olinda (2-1-1).

In the Orange tournament:

Canyon 2, Leuzinger 2--Fernie Sumaya scored both goals in the first-round match for the Comanches, who advanced on penalty kicks, 3-2.

Mission 3, Canyon 0--Joemax Moore, Andy Wortrich, Jim Eddow each scored one goal for the Diablos in the second-round match. Goalie John Finnegan made eight saves against Canyon (4-1).

In the first round of the Irvine boys’ soccer tournament:

Laguna Hills 2, Troy 1--The Hawks advanced on penalty kicks, 5-4. Pat Richards scored in the first half and goalie Kevin Casagranda had eight saves for Laguna Hills (3-0-1).

Tim Roach scored the tying goal in the second half for Troy (0-1-1), and goalie Don Holcombe had 13 saves.

In girls’ nonleague soccer:

La Quinta 4, Lakewood 0--Lara Crowley, Robin Karnes, Jamie Ortwein and Jill Brownlee scored for the Aztecs (3-0) at home.

In three games, La Quinta has had nine goals from eight players.

Goalkeeper Wendy Wilson had 4 saves for the Aztecs and goalie Norma Dempsey had 14 for Lakewood (1-2).
