PRO FOOTBALL : Allegre’s Kick Beats Eagles in Overtime, 23-20

Raul Allegre, who earlier missed two field-goal attempts, kicked a 28-yarder with a 14 m.p.h. wind at his back with 4:49 remaining in overtime Sunday as the New York Giants beat the Philadelphia Eagles, 23-20.

The game-winning drive started on the New York 44 and was keyed by a 36-yard pass from Phil Simms to Mark Bavaro that put the ball at the Eagles’ 20. Two runs by George Adams got the ball to the 11, and Allegre won it.

In the fourth quarter, Allegre had a 31-yard field-goal attempt hit the upright. His 50-yard attempt in overtime was partially blocked by Seth Joyner.

“I was pretty confident with all the kicks,” said Allegre, who made two other field goals, both with the wind. “The wind was pretty rough, but it was something we had to put up with. On the one that hit the crossbar, the wind took it. I hit it pretty good.”

The victory was the Giants’ sixth straight over Philadelphia and their 12th in 14 games with the Eagles.

But it was also a game the Giants almost gave away for the third straight week. They blew fourth-quarter leads against New Orleans and Washington and, Sunday, they had a 14-point edge with less than four minutes to play. But it evaporated.

The Eagles, stifled on offense all day, got two touchdown passes from Randall Cunningham in the final 3:22 of regulation to tie the game.

Cunningham, who was sacked nine times, completed 20 of 43 for 227 yards. He connected with Kenny Jackson on a 36-yard touchdown pass that was tipped by safety Terry Kinard with 3:22 to play to cut the Giants lead to 20-13.

The Eagles (5-7) got the ball back at their 44 with 1:51 left following Sean Landeta’s 31-yard punt into the wind.

After a holding penalty, Cunningham hit Gregg Garrity for 19 yards on third and 21, and Jimmie Giles for eight yards on the next play for the first down at the New York 40. After an incompletion, Giles caught Cunningham’s pass at the 20 and just got into the end zone with 48 seconds to play. Paul McFadden added the extra point to send the game into overtime.

Eagles’ punter John Teltschik set an NFL record by punting 15 times.
