CS Long Beach a 114-64 Winner Over Chaminade

Scoring its most points in 14 years, Cal State Long Beach beat outmanned Chaminade University, 114-64, in a nonconference game Monday night in the university gym.

Long Beach played all 13 of its players.

Chaminade played all eight of its players.

Six 49ers scored in double figures. Morlon Wiley had 20 points, Andre Purry 16, DeAnthony Langston 14, John Hoffman 13, Tony Ronzone 12 and Rigo Moore 11.

The Silverswords of Honolulu (0-6) had the game’s most startling statistic: 42 turnovers. Many of them were forced by Long Beach’s pressing defense.

“I was pleased because we were aggressive the whole game,’ Long Beach Coach Joe Harrington said. “We just kind of wore them down.”

The 49ers, who are 2-1 and will play USC Wednesday night at the Sports Arena, were hot from the start and never trailed. They shot 60% and had eight steals in the first half, It was 60-27 at halftime.

“Our players wanted to have a good game because they were disappointed at the way they played in the second half at Arizona,” Harrington said, referring to the 49ers’ 94-62 loss in Tucson last Friday night.

In the second half, Long Beach kept lengthening the lead via the three-point shot. Moore made three of them, Ronzone two and Hoffman one.

It was the first time the 49ers had scored 100 or more points since they lost to UC Irvine, 120-106, in 1983. And it was their highest total since a 117-75 rout of San Jose State 14 years ago.

Walter Carpenter led Chaminade with 22 points.
