HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS : INLAND CONFERENCE : Carpinteria vs. Tehachapi

The only No. 1-No. 2 confrontation of the Southern Section football finals will occur in the Inland Conference, where Carpinteria, the runner-up last season, will play at Tehachapi Saturday night at 7:30.

Carpinteria, coached by Lou Panizzon, is 13-0 and has 7 shutouts. The defense is led by tackle David Medina, linebacker David Uhler and safety Darshon Etz. The offense, paced by quarterback Coley Candaele and running back John Zanini, has outscored its three playoff opponents, 92-23.

Carpinteria, the Tri-Valley league champion, is making its fourth title-game appearance in its third division since 1975.

Tehachapi (10-2-1) won the Desert-Inyo Large League and reached the championship game, led by quarterback Lance Christensen and three two-way players, linebacker-tailback Rick Sottile, linebacker-tight end Rick Vance and linebacker-fullback Jake Hoague.

Tehachapi, which won the Inland championship in 1980 and ’85 and finished second in 1981, is coached by Steve Denman.
