Majors Among 11 Voted to College Hall of Fame

Johnny Majors, coach at the University of Tennessee, and Jim Ray Smith, former Baylor tackle and a member of the Cotton Bowl selection committee, were among 11 former players formally inducted into the National Football Foundation’s College Football Hall of Fame Tuesday night.

The foundation’s highest honor, the Gold Medal Award, went to Gen. Charles (Monk) Meyer, Army’s triple-threat back of the mid-1930s, who served in three wars and received two Purple Hearts.

Ike Sewell, a former University of Texas guard and prominent Chicago businessman, received the Distinguished American Award.

Besides Majors, a former Tennessee tailback who was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 1956, and Smith, who played at Baylor from 1952-54, the Hall of Fame inductees include Ron Yary, USC, tackle; Carroll Dale, Virginia Tech, end; Don Heinrich, Washington, quarterback; Ted Hendricks, Miami (Fla.), defensive end; Mike Reid, Penn State, defensive tackle; Dick Scott, Navy, center; Joe Steffy, Army, guard; Fran Tarkenton, Georgia, quarterback, and George Webster, Michigan State, linebacker.

Also inducted into the Hall of Fame were coaches Bob Blackman of Denver, Dartmouth, Illinois and Cornell and Dave Nelson of Hillsdale, Maine and Delaware.
