Mira Mesa Boys Leave Hilltop Behind

Leading by just six at halftime, Mira Mesa outscored Hilltop, 28-14, in the third quarter on the way to an 89-61 victory in the round-robin Hilltop Tournament Thursday night.

In the third period, Mira Mesa’s Chad Shirely scored 13 of his 23 points and Tal Miller, who led all scorers with 25, made all six of his free throw tries. Four came on technical fouls on Hilltop Coach Jan Chapman and player James McCurdy.

Mark Dirksen led Hilltop with 21 points. Scott Smith scored 13 for Mira Mesa.

In other Hilltop tournament games:

Chula Vista 56, Hoover 42--Scott Matney and Ritchie Greaser each scored 14 points for Chula Vista. Chula Vista led, 29-21, at halftime but outscored Hoover, 19-9, in the third quarter. Bracy Simmons led Hoover with 14 points.

La Jolla 76, Point Loma 62--Adam Kleid scored 16 points and David Berteaux 9 in the first period as La Jolla took a 42-26 halftime lead, then coasted. Kleid scored a game-high 22 points, and Berteaux finished with 20. Beau Pack scored 16 for Point Loma.

Kearny 60, Sweetwater 44--John Williamson had 17 points and Randy Robinson 16 for Kearny. Robinson scored eight in the fourth quarter when Kearny outscored Sweetwater, 19-12. Pierre Jones and Carlos Campbell each scored 12 for Sweetwater.

In the Elsinore Tournament:

El Camino 70, Bloomington 67--Lee Cobb scored 22 points and had 12 rebounds to lead El Camino (2-0) in the tournament semifinals at Elsinore High. Scott Oatsvall scored 16 and Steve Carr and David Hill 14 apiece for El Camino, which rallied from a 35-31 halftime deficit. El Camino will play the winner of Thursday night’s late Carlsbad-Elsinore game in the finals tonight.

GIRLS’ NONLEAGUE

Orange Glen 47, El Camino 16--Orange Glen (3-1) jumped to a 10-0 lead after the first quarter and led 23-6 at halftime against El Camino (0-1). Laura Hughes was game’s only scorer in double figures, leading Orange Glen with 20 points.
