Fountain Valley Tournament : Fountain Valley Wins This Title, but Not Many Are Around to See It

Except for the timing, Fountain Valley High School’s 48-40 victory over Edison Friday night had all the makings of a major event.

In winning the seventh Fountain Valley boys’ basketball tournament, the Barons beat a league rival, established themselves as Sunset League contenders and ran their season record to 4-0.

Too bad hardly anybody noticed. While the Fountain Valley football team was playing in front of 18,532 under the bright lights of Anaheim Stadium, the Barons’ basketball team labored in loneliness on their home court.

“No announcer, no timer, no drinks,” Baron Coach Dave Brown kidded his players afterward.

Only 150 fans were on hand to watch Jim Borgquist score 18 points and Kevin Anderson grab a dozen rebounds as Fountain Valley won its own tournament for the first time since 1983. Anderson, despite scoring just five points in the final, was the tournament’s most valuable player. Borgquist and point guard Tom Weaver joined him on the all-tournament team.

The Barons, who stunned Woodbridge in Thursday’s semifinal, took a 28-15 lead and maintained that margin after three quarters. A 12-5 run pulled the Chargers to within six points, 44-38, with two minutes remaining, but a pair of missed free throws and two turnovers killed the rally.

“This is a good start for us,” Brown said. “We beat some good teams in this tournament. It (the crowd) was a real shame.”

Alvin Loftis had 13 points and Chip Hanlon 10 for the Chargers. Loftis and teammate Mike Foster were all-tournament selections.
