Prep Soccer Roundup : Newport Harbor in Final After Overtime Victory

The Newport Harbor High School boys’ soccer team outscored Capistrano Valley, 8-7, in overtime penalty kicks Friday at Irvine High School to advance to the final of the Irvine tournament.

The Sailors (3-0) took a 1-0 lead midway through the second quarter on Peter Dunynstee’s penalty kick. The Cougars (2-0-1) tied the score midway through the second half, when goalie Dave Linblad scored on a penalty kick. The teams were tied, 1-1, in regulation.

Goalie Royce Hudson made eight saves for Newport Harbor. Linblad made five saves.

The Sailors will play El Toro today in the final.

In nonleague action:

Brea-Olinda 1, Kennedy 1--Scott Maurer scored as time ran out to give Brea a tie at Kennedy. Mark Florek, an exchange student from Poland, scored 22 minutes into the game to give Kennedy (1-2-2) a 1-0 lead.

Goalie Jack McConnell had 11 saves for Kennedy, and Dan La France had seven for Brea (2-2-3).

Rolling Hills 2, Fountain Valley 1--Mike Lumkin and John Chi scored goals to lead the Titans at Fountain Valley. After Lumkin’s goal one minute into the match, the Barons’ Marc Merli scored at the 20-minute mark for a 1-1 tie. Chi put Rolling Hills ahead to stay with 10 minutes left in the first half. Goalie Jason Smith made seven saves in the second half to preserve the win. Tim Morenc made five saves for Fountain Valley (3-2)

Canyon 1, Valencia 0--Phil Gasca scored off a pass from Tim McGuire with 10 minutes left in the match to give the host Comanches (5-1) the victory. Goalies Daren Lauck and Chris Snitko combined for the shutout. Valencia is 3-4.

In girls’ play:

In the Irvine tournament:

Capistrano Valley 4, Newport Harbor 0--The Cougars (4-0) advanced to the final on goals from Becky Linhart, Sarah Toomey, Keri Richardson and Sarah Stoney at Alton Park. Goalie Pam Gladden made two saves for Capistrano Valley.

Corona del Mar 1, Foothill 0--Stacy Karges scored on a penalty kick at the 30-minute mark of the first half for the Sea Kings (4-1). Goalie Kim Kolstad made eight saves in recording her fourth shutout of the season.

Foothill is 2-3.
