J. P. Ouellette scored 17 points as Royal soundly defeated Santa Paula, 86-35, in a nonleague basketball game Tuesday at Royal. Nine of Ouellette’s points came via the three-point shot.

Ouellette became the sixth Highlander in eight games to lead the team in scoring.

“It seems like every game someone else is the leading scorer,” first-year Royal Coach Joe Malkinson said. “We’re playing well as a team.”

Royal (6-2), ranked No. 10 in the Times Valley poll, shot 51.5% and outrebounded Santa Paula, 50-18. The Cardinals, unable to solve the Highlanders’ man-to-man defense, made just 24% of their field-goal attempts.

Russell Myers scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds for Royal, and Chad Smith contributed seven rebounds.

Birmingham 61, Van Nuys 50--The Braves overcame a 20-point second-quarter deficit behind Glenn Sucich’s 18 points and eight rebounds in the nonleague game at home. Birmingham (2-3) made 1 of 7 shots in the first quarter but came back with a fast-tempo offense that eventually closed the gap in the fourth quarter.

Sucich and Greg Maxwell each scored six points in the second quarter. Maxwell finished with 13 points, 5 assists and 4 of Birmingham’s 16 steals.

Guard Alonzo Galloway scored a game-high 20 points for Van Nuys (2-2).

Hart 73, Canyon 49--With four players from the football team finally worked into its program, Hart dominated the boards, outrebounding Canyon, 64-33, in the nonleague game at Canyon.

Forward Brett Wilson led Hart (4-3) with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

In addition to the four football players--Brian Jacobs, Brian Allen, Kevin Keogh, and Jim Harper--all of whom saw limited playing time, the Indians got a boost when the Southern Section office ruled Craig Gorski eligible after moving from Virginia. Guards Phil Briones had 14 points and six assists and Steve Valenzuela added 13 points for Hart.

Mike Garner led Canyon (1-5) with 17 points.

Burbank 64, Hoover 53--The Bulldogs made 8 of 8 technical free throws in the fourth quarter, and forward Mike Nash scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Burbank (4-2) in the nonleague game at home.
