Wilson Coach and Lineman, St. Anthony Back Honored

Al Taylor of Wilson High School, who led his team to the biggest upsets of the football season, is the 1987 South Coast Coach of the Year.

Donald Levingston of St. Anthony is Back of the Year and Bob Pierce of Wilson is Lineman of the Year.

They were honored Sunday at the 29th annual Times’ Football Awards Brunch in the Anaheim Hilton.

Taylor, whose Bruins surprised Eisenhower and Loyola in the playoffs, became head coach at Wilson in 1983. He announced his retirement last week, saying he hopes to become a school administrator.

Levingston, who played safety, cornerback, receiver, fullback and tailback, scored 88 points for the season.

Pierce is a 218-pound senior who wants to play football at one of the service academies and become a fighter pilot.

In the Southeast Area, Doug Rihn of Montebello is Coach of the Year, Adan Avina of Montebello is the top back and Lynwood’s Melvin Johnson is the top lineman.
