Area Roundup : All-Star Volleyball Match Set for Tonight

The International Ambassadors, a women’s volleyball team with headquarters in Irvine, will play a men’s all-star team tonight at 8 at Estancia High School.

Penny Lucas and Gayle Stammer head the Ambassadors, who will leave Sunday for the Netherlands, where they will compete in the Oce Dynamo Olympic tournament against national teams from Cuba, South Korea and East Germany.

Tom Pestolesi, a University of Hawaii All-American, will lead the men’s team against the Ambassadors. The public is invited, and admission is free.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn.’s Holiday Intercollegiate Tennis Festival will be held Dec. 26-30 at the Sunny Hills Racquet Club.

The tournament features top college players from schools such as USC, UCLA, UC Irvine and Pepperdine.

Past participants included Brad Gilbert and Rick Leach, now on the professional tour.

Applications for the fourth New Year’s Slo-Pitch softball tournament are being accepted. The tournament will be played at Hart Park in Orange on Jan. 2. Entry fee is $150 per team. All teams are guaranteed to play at least four games.

Carrie Garritson of Fullerton is the youngest athlete to accept an entry to the Sunkist Invitational indoor track and field meet, to be held Jan. 22 at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.

Garritson, 11, will run the two-mile, in which she has a best of 10 minutes 30 seconds. The youngest athlete before Garritson was Mary Decker, who was 13 when she competed in the meet for the first time.

The Armed Forces Powerlifting Championships, featuring the country’s top 44 military lifters, will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 17 at the El Toro Marine Base gymnasium. . . . Mike Dodd, Huntington Beach High School baseball coach, will coach a team from Southern California at the Stockholm Baseball Weekend July 1-3 in Sweden.
