Jones, Monestime Continue to Harvest Football Honors

Roger Jones, the Channel Islands High defensive tackle who was The Times’ lineman of the year in the county, has been selected to the first All-Southern Section team. Jones, a senior who had a school-record 22 sacks in 13 games for Channel Islands, was the only county player named on the 24-player roster, which consists of players from every conference in the Southern Section.

Jones was one of 14 county players selected to the All-Coastal Conference team. He was joined on the defensive line by David Nunnery of Hueneme and Eric Anhalt of Royal.

Marc Monestime, the county’s all-time leading rusher, was named conference player of the year. Monestime, a senior running back for conference champion Thousand Oaks, earlier was selected county back of the year by The Times.

Others honored on the all-conference team were linebackers Steve Dailey of Ventura and Mack Humphrey of Thousand Oaks, defensive backs John Sunia of Channel Islands, Kyron Johnson of Ventura and Chris Gann of Thousand Oaks, offensive linemen Carlos Hernandez of Channel Islands and Eric Dennis of Thousand Oaks, receiver Gil Valencia of Camarillo and running backs John Johnson of Channel Islands and Tony Kerr of Simi Valley.

Selected to the All-Desert-Mountain Conference team were quarterback Will McInerney and receiver Marcos Sanchez of Santa Paula and center Ben Clark of Santa Clara. All three were named all-county by The Times.

Jason Stein of Oak Park and David Stratton of Moorpark made the All-Inland Conference team. Stein, an all-purpose performer, was listed as a defensive back. Stratton was the kicker.

Monestime also was voted the county’s offensive player of the year by the Ventura Coaches’ Assn. Jones of Channel Islands was defensive player of the year and George Machado of Hueneme, who also was honored by The Times, was coach of the year.

Channel Islands, champion of the Marmonte League, had the most players (10) to make the first and second teams. Ventura (8) and Thousand Oaks (6) followed. Every high school in the county with an 11-man football team was represented on the coaches’ team.
