Marina, Capistrano Valley Favored in the Orange Holiday Tournament

Marina High School is the top-seeded team in the 23rd Orange Holiday tournament beginning today in Chapman College’s Hutton Sports Center.

The Vikings are returning to the 16-team tournament after a one year absence. This time they feature 6-foot 6-inch forward Steve Guild who has signed a national letter of intent to attend Pepperdine University.

Capistrano Valley, the runnerup in the tournament last season, is seeded second. The Cougars have two talented sophomores, Chris Kostoff and Scott McCorkle. Lakewood is seeded third and Westminster is seeded fourth.

Among the entries is Orting High from eastern Washington and Palm Beach Gardens from southern Florida. Orting was a state champion in 1983, and Palm Beach Gardens reached the quarterfinals of its state tournament last season.

Some of the top players scheduled to compete are Victor and Brian Camper (Lakewood), Gylan and Malru Dottin (Saddleback), Wendell Lauderdale (Kennedy), Alan Lewis (Fullerton), Greg Reiber (Foothill) and Chris Tower (Westminster).

Mater Dei, five-time defending champion, opted to travel to Atlantic City and will not compete this season. The championship game is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. The first-round pairings:

10 a.m.--Westminster vs. Kennedy; 11:40--Santa Clara vs. Orange; 1:20 p.m.--Orange Lutheran vs. Lakewood; 3--Foothill vs. Fullerton; 4:40--Saddleback vs. Marina; 6:20--Orting vs. Fountain Valley; 8--Dominguez vs. Palm Beach Gardens; 9:30--Capistrano Valley vs. El Modena.

Edgewood High School is the top-seeded team and Warren is seeded second in the third Coast Christmas tournament beginning today at Estancia High.

Top area teams competing are third-seeded Laguna Hills and fourth-seeded Corona del Mar. Also entered in the 16-team tournament is Huntington Beach and Edison of the powerful Sunset League.

Top players in the tournament are Mike Curtis (Estancia), John Lloyd (Dana Hills), Alvin Loftis (Edison), Brett Pagett (Los Alamitos), Geoff Probst (Corona del Mar), Kyle Roberts (Laguna Hills) and Andy Thompson (Huntington Beach).

The defending champion is Mission Viejo, which won the tournament with a five-overtime victory over El Toro last season. The championship game is scheduled for 8 p.m. Tuesday. The first-round pairings:

Sunny Hills High School, with five returning starters, is the favorite in the 23rd Brea-Olinda Letterman’s Club tournament beginning tonight.

Sunny Hills, ranked sixth in the Orange County Sportswriters Assn. poll, meets Whittier Christian, runnerup in the Southern Section’s 1-A division the past two years, tonight.

Top players are Gary Hunter (Buena Park), Erik Martin (Whittier Christian), Brian McCloskey (Sunny Hills) and Keith Walker (Brea-Olinda).

The championship game is scheduled for 8:15 Wednesday. The first-round pairings:

Tonight: 6:30 p.m.--La Habra vs. Centennial; 8:15--Brea-Olinda vs. Don Lugo.

Monday: 6:30 p.m.--Buena Park vs. El Dorado; 8:15--Whittier Christian vs. Sunny Hills.

Long Beach Millikan High School is the favorite to win the Katella tournament scheduled to begin tonight.

The Rams (6-2) are tournament defending champions. They were the runnersup in the Cerritos-Gahr tournament and finished third in the Fountain Valley tournament.

Other top teams competing are Katella, Servite and Western. Top players are Jerry Babe (Katella), Chris Bowen (Western), Brian Kenney (Servite), Frankie Edwards and Dion Robinson (LB Millikan).

First-round games will be held tonight and Monday. The championship game is scheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday. The first-round pairings:

Today: 6:30 p.m.--Servite vs. Bell; 8--Rancho Alamitos vs. Katella.

Monday: 6:30 p.m.--Gahr vs. Thousand Oaks; 8--Western vs. LB Millikan.

Magnolia forward Mike Goff, Orange County’s scoring leader with a 36.8 scoring average, will be competing in the Canyon tournament beginning today in the Comanches’ gymnasium.

Goff has been held to fewer than 30 points only once in six games and scored a career-high 53 points against Brea-Olinda. It was the fourth-highest single-game scoring total in county history.

The 16-team tournament begins at 8 a.m. with the first of eight first-round games. The championship game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The first-round pairings:

The county’s top girls’ teams, including El Toro, Marina and Mission Viejo, will compete in the Marina-Edison tournament beginning today at Marina.

El Toro’s Elaine Youngs, one of the county’s top players, and Marina’s Dawn Charroin are among the players to watch.

The 16-team tournament begins play at 9:30 a.m. The championship is scheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday.
