Mater Dei High School played East Coast power St. Nicholas of Tolentine, N.Y., a day late and about 75 miles away from where the game was originally scheduled.

The Monarchs lost to St. Nicholas, 58-46, Tuesday night at the duPont Pavilion at Villanova University in an intersectional nonleague game.

The teams were supposed to play Monday night in the semifinal round of the Seagull Tournament in Atlantic City, N.J., but tournament officials canceled the tournament after a gang-related riot in which five people were injured during halftime of Saturday night’s Mater Dei-Atlantic City game.

About 200 watched Tuesday as Mike Hopkins scored 21 points and Kevin Rembert added 13 for the Monarchs.

Mater Dei fell behind, 26-17, at halftime and never could catch up.

Mater Dei and St. Nicholas agreed to play after the tournament was canceled. With a little help from the grandfather of Mike Morris, a Monarch player, the teams were able to secure Villanova’s home arena for the afternoon game. Morris’ grandfather is an employee at the suburban Philadelphia school.

The Monarchs were unable to secure any other replacement games. They will, however, tour Washington before returning home Jan. 4.
