San Diego High Schools : Torrey Pines Wins Title by Beating Kearny, 71-62

Torrey Pines used a 22-11 third-quarter scoring advantage en route to a 71-62 victory over Kearny in the final of the Baron/Optimist Tournament Wednesday night at Bonita Vista.

Junior swing man Courtie Miller scored 6 of his 19 points in the third quarter. Kearny (9-2) led 33-31 at the half on the strength of Chris Ortiz’s 10 first-half points.

Torrey Pines (14-0) decided to change defenses for the third quarter, going to a box and one with 5-foot 10-inch guard Tom Underwood guarding 6-1 Ortiz. Torrey Pines ran off 8 of the first 10 points of the second half for a, 39-35, lead that it did not relinquish.

In other Baron/Optimist tournament games:

Morse 66, El Camino 64-- Willie Davis made two free throws with no time left for Morse in the third place game at Bonita Vista. With two seconds left, El Camino’s Steve Carr blocked a Morse shot and El Camino controled the ball and called time out. Scott Oatsvall’s long in bounds pass hit the rafters and Morse gained possession under its basket. The in bounds pass went to Davis, who was fouled by Lee Cobb with no time left. Davis led Morse with 18 points and Mark Lawrence added 15. Oatsvall led El Camino (7-3) with 25 points. Cobb had 15 points and 12 rebounds and David Hill had 12 rebounds for El Camino.

SANTANA TOURNAMENT

Lincoln 79, Chula Vista 70--Joe Temple scored 20 points to lead four Lincoln players in double figures in the final round of pool play at Santana High. Lincoln (11-1) will play Santana in the championship game Saturday night at 8. Kenny Hawkins had 16 points for Lincoln, Carl Gaines had 13 and Roger Johnson had 12. For Chula Vista (4-9), Scott Matney had 31 points, mostly on lay ups, and James Shaw added 14. Chula Vista, which plays Clairemont at 3 p.m. Saturday, closed to 72-68 with about two minutes to play.

Santana 58, Patrick Henry 52--Matt Panebianco scored a three-point play on a lay up and a foul shot with 24 seconds to play as Santana held off a late Patrick Henry rally to advance to Saturday night’s tournament final. Santana led, 47-37, after three quarters and, 54-48, before Patrick Henry closed to, 54-52, with 46 seconds remaining in the game on a three-pointer by Ken Carsar and another one by Collis Hunt. Terrance Hamilton led Patrick Henry with 22 points. Tim Barry had 14 points for Santana (10-0), Andy Heacock had 12 and Stu Bock 11.

ROHR/AZTEC TOURNAMENT

Basic 68, Montebello 65--Basic High from Las Vegas defeated Montebello High from Los Angeles County in the championship game at Montgomery High.

Christian 70, Mar Vista 57--Christian won the third place game.

Briefly--Castle Park 79, El Cajon 45, and Montgomery 82, Coronado 54.

NONLEAGUE

Madison 63, San Dieguito 47--Jeff Alexander and Andre Mitchell had 17 points apiece to lead Madison at San Dieguito. Jack Minger scored 23 points for San Dieguito (6-6). Madison (10-2) led 32-20 at the half.
