The state has $15 million in earthquake aid available to victims of the Oct. 1 earthquake that hit Southern California and is accepting applications for the money, officials said Thursday.

Representatives from the Department of Housing and Community Development said $7.5 million will be granted to qualified individual homeowners and $7.5 million is available to qualified owners of rental housing.

“Every victim of the October Los Angeles-Whittier Narrows earthquake needs to know that he or she may be eligible for financial assistance to repair earthquake damage,” said Christine Diemer Reed, director of the department.

To qualify, Reed said, victims must have first applied at a Disaster Assistance Center and submitted an application to the Small Business Administration. If money from those sources does not cover damage costs, then victims may apply for state money, she said.

Applications for individual owner-occupants are available through the Department of Housing in Sacramento or at local city halls. Owners of rental housing should contact local city halls to determine their eligibility, Reed said.

Reed said the state will accept applications until all money has been distributed.
