Ireland’s Marcus O’Sullivan, a runner-up in each of the last two years, out-sprinted 1985 winner Steve Scott and defending champion Ray Flynn in the final 400 yards to win the third annual Fiesta Bowl mile run in Phoenix. O’Sullivan posted a winning time of 4 minutes 1.5 seconds, beating Scott by five-tenths of a second and countryman Flynn by 1.5 seconds in the elite eight-man field.
Meanwhile in the second annual Fiesta Bowl bicycle race, former Olympian Leonard (Harvey) Nitz of Sacramento shook off two competitors with 250 meters remaining on the final lap and coasted to victory.
