College Basketball Roundup : Lewis, 10th-Ranked Purdue Gun Down 19th-Ranked Illinois

Troy Lewis scored 25 points Monday night to lead 10th-ranked Purdue to an 81-68 victory over No. 19 Illinois in a Big Ten opener at Champaign, Ill.

Purdue (11-1) held a 41-40 lead with 16:30 left before taking command with a 14-6 surge.

Lewis, who scored 18 points in the second half, hit a three-pointer to give the Boilermakers a 64-54 advantage with 5:34 left, and Illinois (9-3) didn’t challenge again.

Tony Jones added 14 points for Purdue. Todd Mitchell scored 11, and Everette Stephens and Kip Jones had 10 each.

Glynn Blackwell scored 18 points for Illinois, and Ken Battle had 15.

Oklahoma 109, Austin Peay 69--Harvey Grant had 22 points and 13 rebounds, and Ricky Grace added 20 points and 11 assists as the eighth-ranked Sooners overwhelmed the Governors at Norman, Okla.

The Sooners (13-0) set a Big Eight Conference record by going over the 100-point mark for the 10th time this season. Oklahoma set the mark of nine during the 1984-85 season.

Austin Peay (4-7) had only eight players suited up. Coach Lake Kelly said four others were suspended for violating team rules. The Governors also lost starting point guard Marshall Ayers with an ankle injury early in the game.

Temple 86, Rutgers 60--Tim Perry scored 16 points, including the 1,000th of his career, and the sixth-ranked Owls beat the Scarlet Knights in an Atlantic 10 Conference game at Philadelphia.

Perry, who has scored 1,003 points, became the 26th Temple player to reach the 1,000 mark. He also grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked 4 shots as the Owls (8-0, 4-0) defeated Rutgers for the 11th straight time.

Mike Vreeswyk had 17 points, and Howard Evans added 10 points and 10 assists for Temple. Darren Campbell scored 15 points for Rutgers (3-6, 0-3).

Florida 77, Towson State 55--Vernon Maxwell scored 13 points, and the No. 15 Gators gave Norm Sloan his 200th victory as coach at Florida by routing the Tigers at Gainesville, Fla.

Pat Lawrence and Livingston Chatman had 12 points apiece, and Clifford Lett, Dwayne Davis and Dwayne Schintzius each added 11 for the Gators (9-3), who lost two of their previous three games.

Sloan, in his second tour with the Gators, improved to 200-172 at Florida and 592-373 overall.

Marty Johnson scored 18 points for Towson State (6-5).

Villanova 69, St. John’s 62--Doug West scored 21 points, including four free throws down the stretch, and the Wildcats outlasted the No. 20 Redmen in a Big East game at New York.

The defeat was only the second in the last 37 home games for St. John’s.

Villanova (10-3, 2-0) had a 40-25 lead when West scored the first basket of the second half.

St. John’s (8-2, 0-1) rallied to pull within 62-59 with 49 seconds left, but the Wildcats made 7 of 8 free throws in the closing seconds.

Shelton Jones scored 20 points for St. John’s, and Gary Massey added 15 for Villanova.

Duke 101, William & Mary 70--Danny Ferry scored 26 points, including 18 in the first half, and the ninth-ranked Blue Devils rolled past the Indians at Durham, N.C.

Kevin Strickland and Phil Henderson added 12 points each for the Blue Devils (7-1), who built a 55-20 halftime lead.

Jimmy Apple scored 21 points for William & Mary (2-7).

Lafayette 83, Notre Dame 68--Otis Ellis scored 35 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Leopards upset the Irish at Easton, Pa.

After the Leopards (4-4) led, 37-33, at the half, Ellis converted a three-point play with 10:03 remaining in the game increase the lead to 56-43.

David Rivers scored 31 points for Notre Dame (7-3), but the Irish got no closer than 72-64 with 1:32 left.

Illinois State 85, Bradley 74--Tony Holifield scored 23 points, and Cliff Peterson had 22 as the Redbirds surprised the Braves in a Missouri Valley Conference opener at Peoria, Ill.

The Redbirds (6-5) held Hersey Hawkins of Bradley (6-2), the nation’s leading scorer with a 40.3 average, to a season-low 29 points.

Louisville 80, South Alabama 69--Pervis Ellison scored 20 points, and the Cardinals turned back the Jaguars at Louisville.

The Cardinals (6-3) opened the game with a 16-2 scoring run and built a 41-13 lead with 3:38 left in the first half.

Jeff Hodge scored 27 points, and Junie Lewis added 19 for South Alabama (5-5), which pulled within 68-57 on Lewis’ three-point shot with 3:55 left, but the Jaguars could get no closer.

Utah State 90, Fresno State 68--Reid Newey scored 23 points, and the Aggies downed the Bulldogs in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Fresno.

Newey lead a three-point shooting spree by the Aggies (7-4, 2-0), hitting 6 of 7 from behind the line. Mike Mitchell scored 27 points for Fresno (3-8, 0-2).
