Girls’ Basketball Roundup : Edison Breaks Away From Mater Dei

Wendy Sandstedd and Kristen Tanabe each scored 21 points to lead Edison High School to a 62-57 win over Mater Dei in a girls’ basketball game Tuesday night at Edison.
Sandstedd had 10 rebounds and Tanabe 16 for the Chargers, who are ranked fourth in Orange County. Mater Dei’s Kelly O’Brien scored 18 points to lead the Monarchs (10-5). Edison is 12-4.
Stefanie Moorman had 9 of her 12 points as Edison broke open a close game after halftime. The score was tied, 30-30, at halftime, but the Chargers, behind Moorman, outscored the Monarchs, 18-10.
Edison led, 60-42, at one point before Mater Dei staged a late rally.
In other nonleague games:
Huntington Beach 58, Cypress 46--Forward Tami Chick scored a game-high 25 points and had 8 rebounds to lead Huntington Beach (8-5) at home. Diane Pohl scored 13 for Cypress.
El Toro 62, Magnolia 40--Kristen Bevis led the Chargers with 14 points. Dawne Borum scored 18 points for Magnolia (6-6), and Rena Rossoll had 12 points, 11 blocked shots and 10 rebounds.
Newport Harbor 45, Santa Ana 43--Jenny Stucker scored 14 points, Stacy Gein 11 and Jennifer Hamilton 10 for Newport Harbor (7-8) at Santa Ana. Mona Martinez scored 14 for Santa Ana (3-4).
El Modena 47, Fullerton 40--Mindy McFann and Ginger Root scored 18 points each to lead El Modena at Fullerton. Sabrina Welch scored 11 and had 16 rebounds, and Sharon Spadt scored 10 for Fullerton (5-4).
Esperanza 71, La Mirada 42--Karin Davidson scored 25 points and Jennifer Harney 12 for Esperanza (6-7), which won at home.
In Academy League play:
Liberty Christian 55, Whitney 45--Point guard Sharon Crouch scored a game-high 23 points for Liberty Christian. Lisa Whitney, a forward, had 18 points and 24 rebounds for Liberty Christian (8-1, 4-0). Whitney is 4-2, 1-1.
In Olympic League play:
Orange Lutheran 50, Brethren 37--The Lancers had three players in double figures in the league-opening win at home. Devon Koster had 18 points, Pam Marty 16 and Dee Dee Oyama 10 for Orange Lutheran (5-3, 1-0). Marty scored 8 of her points in the fourth quarter. Keshia Gaines led Brethren (0-6, 0-1) with 12 points.
Whittier Christian 58, Capistrano Valley Christian 38--Cheryl Ann Culp scored 23 points to lead Whittier Christian at home. Whittier Christian opened a 30-4 halftime lead.
