Soccer Roundup : Mater Dei Girls Beat Bishop Montgomery in Angelus League Opener

Laura Spinner and Tina Manfre both scored goals to lead Mater Dei High School to a 2-1 victory over Bishop Montgomery Wednesday in the Angelus League girls' soccer opener at Mater Dei.

Spinner gave the Monarchs a 1-0 lead 30 minutes into the first half, with an assist by Amy Sissunse.

Sissunse's pass bounced 10 yards in front of the goal. Spinner beat goalie Chris Massaro to the ball and scored into the open net.

Manfre made it 2-0 at the 25-minute mark of the second half, when she took a pass from Allison Salinger and beat Massaro to the right from 20 yards out.

Bishop Montgomery's Kathy Surich scored with five minutes left.

Mater Dei goalie Michelle Lodyga made one save, and Massaro made 22 saves.

In another girls' game:

Woodbridge 2, Tustin 0--Jaymee Stone and Tine Barrett both scored goals for the Warriors (4-5) in a nonleague game. Melissa Glover made three saves for Woodbridge.

Pacifica 3, Los Amigos 2--Daniel Barber scored three goals for the Mariners (1-2-1, 1-0) at Los Amigos. Tino Bui and Armando Reyes both scored goals for the Lobos. Goalie Eric Cadacio made four saves for Pacifica, and Juan Rivera had 12 saves for Los Amigos.

Kennedy 4, La Quinta 1--Kyong Kim and Mark Slorek both scored two goals for the Irish (3-2-2, 1-0) at La Quinta. Goalie Jack McConnell made 10 saves for Kennedy.

Irvine 2, El Dorado 1--Joe Osso and Rob Cavanaugh scored goals for the host Vaqueros (2-3-1). Goalie Shane Brosanan made 11 saves for Irvine. Ken Scott made five saves for El Dorado (5-3).

Cypress 1, Bellflower 0--Damon Owen scored from 18 yards out 10 minutes into the second half at Bellflower. Joey Chavez provided the assist, and goalie Lee Milton had seven saves for the Centurions (8-4-2).

Katella 1, El Modena 1--Marce Ortiz scored for Knights and David Adams for the Vanguards at Katella. Goalie Scott Boigardus made 10 saves for Katella (7-1-3) and Steve Allen had three for El Modena.

Newport Harbor 2, Westminster 1--Adrian Whale and Tom Walker both scored goals to lead the Sailors (7-2-1) at Newport Harbor. Troy Rossen scored for the Lions. Goalie Ken Wilcut made three saves for Newport Harbor. Joe Luera had eight saves for Westminster.

Canyon 1, Esperanza 0--Brian Lou scored at the 25-minute mark of the first half for the Comanches (10-4) at Esperanza. Goalie Darren Lauck had six saves for Canyon. Derick Sabori made seven saves for the Aztecs (5-3-2).

Edison 2, Brea-Olinda 0--Andy Strouse and Geza Simon scored goals in the second half to give the Chargers (10-4) the nonleague victory at Brea-Olinda. Brea-Olinda (4-3-4) goalkeeper Danny Lafrance had nine saves.
