Capistrano Valley Replaces Mater Dei as the Newest No. 1

Capistrano Valley High School has become the fourth team in six weeks to be ranked No. 1 in the Orange County Sportswriters’ Assn. prep basketball poll after the Cougars upset Mater Dei, 57-55, Saturday night.

Mater Dei, Marina and Santa Ana have been ranked No. 1. Mater Dei was the county’s top-ranked team in a preseason poll, and had regained its position in the fifth week of the season.

In the featured game this week, Capistrano Valley will play fifth-ranked El Toro at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the South Coast League Tipoff in UC Irvine’s Bren Center.
