Boys’ Roundup : Brea Hits 61% to Beat Magnolia

Brea-Olinda High School shot well enough to counter another big game by Mike Goff as the Wildcats defeated Magnolia, 74-65, in a Orange League game Wednesday at Brea.

Brea-Olinda shot 61% from the field (30 for 49). Matt Chamberlin led Brea (8-7, 1-0) with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Keith Walker had 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Goff, the leading scorer in Orange County averaging 31.4 entering the game, had 29 points to lead Magnolia (4-8, 0-1). Jerry Jones added 15 points for Magnolia.

In other Orange League games:

Western 63, Valencia 60--Chris Bowman scored 28 points to lead Western in the league opener at Valencia. Valencia opened a 27-14 lead at the end of the first quarter but Western tied the score, 31-31, at the half. Bernie James scored 21 for Valencia (6-8).

Savanna 51, Anaheim 41--Savanna led by 14 after the first quarter, and by as many as 22 in the fourth quarter as it cruised to a relatively easy win over Anaheim (1-10, 0-1). Savanna (13-3, 1-0) received balanced scoring, led by Timmy Tillman who scored 13 and had 16 rebounds.

In the Century League:

Santa Ana 68, Canyon 53--Santa Ana center Bobby Joyce scored 16 points, had 12 rebounds and 7 blocked shots at Canyon. Oscar Wilson also had 16 points for Santa Ana (14-3, 1-0), and Willie Lane had 11 points. Canyon was led by Ralph Pacheco’s 17 points.

El Modena 59, Villa Park 40--Robby Pietch scored 22 points to lead El Modena (7-7, 1-0) at Villa park.

In the Empire League:

Los Alamitos 76, Katella 45--Dre Lamoureux had 24 points and 17 rebounds to lead the host Griffins (11-6, 2-0). Tony Ware scored 14 points and Bret Pagett 13 for Los Alamitos. Katella is 4-9 overall and 1-1 in league.

El Dorado 70, Cypress 66--Charlie Stevens scored 24 points and Chris Facione 20 to lead the Hawks (9-5, 2-0) at Cypress. Greg Bedford had 32 points for the Centurions (3-11, 0-2).

In the Freeway League:

Troy 59, Buena Park 50--Tim Morris scored 13 points and Matt Crothers 10 for the Warriors (10-4, 3-0) at Buena Park. Kevin Graddy had 21 points and Gary Hunter 14 for the Coyotes (8-5, 1-2).

Sunny Hills 91, La Habra 62--Brian McCloskey had 17 points and Marcus Hopkins and Chris Drakos each had 16 for the host Lancers (13-1, 3-0). La Habra was led by Eddie Ortiz, who scored 18 points.

Fullerton 42, Sonora 39--Greg Wilber scored 14 points and Pete Bach had 10 to lead Fullerton (8-6, 2-1) at Sonora. Scott St. Clair led Sonora (5-9, 0-3) with 12 points.

In the Garden Grove League:

Kennedy 81, Garden Grove 35--Mike Pettingell had a school-record 16 assists, as the host Fighting Irish (8-6, 4-0) routed the Argonauts (2-12, 1-3). Maurice Keith had 14 points and Wendell Lauderdale 13 to lead Kennedy.

Rancho Alamitos 62, Pacifica 50--Gary Lira scored 20 points and Tim Pavelec had 18 to lead Rancho Alamitos (4-7, 3-1) at Pacifica. Pavelec scored 12 points in the fourth quarter.

Los Amigos 64, La Quinta 59--Carlos Palomino scored 23 points, including two jump shots in the final minute, to lead the Lobos at La Quinta. Scott Campbell had 16 points for the Aztecs (8-6, 1-3).

In the Sea View League:

Newport Harbor 47, Corona del Mar 45--Tyler Koon scored 16 points and Jim Geerlings 10 for Newport Harbor, which won at Corona del Mar. Matt Herrington scored 10 points for Corona del Mar (9-6, 0-1.)

Saddleback 64, University 57--Trailing by a point at halftime, 26-25, Saddleback made 14 of 20 shots in the second half for the victory at University. Forward Gylan Dottin, who scored 16 of his 23 points in the second half, led Saddleback, and Craig Marshall scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half. Steve Stolzoff led University with 16 points.

Tustin 46, Estancia 39--Leo Parker scored 16 points and B. LeSean London 10 for the host Tillers (14-3, 1-0). Estancia is 11-7, 1-0.

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 71, Huntington Beach 50--Kevin Andersen scored 28 points to lead Fountain Valley (12-2, 2-0) at Huntington Beach. Fountain Valley’s Jim Borgquist had 14 points, including four three-point shots. Huntington Beach was led by Rich Hughes, who scored 26 points, including five three-point shots. However, Hughes was the only player to score in double figures for Huntington Beach (7-10, 1-1).

Ocean View 63, Marina 60--The Seahawks (6-7, 1-1) made 8 of 10 free throws in the final quarter to hold off the Vikings (10-5, 0-2) at Ocean View. Todd Norman had 18 points and Craig Rice 17 to lead Ocean View. Steve Guild scored 20 points for Marina.

Westminster 70, Edison 64--Westminster center Chris Tower scored 28 points at Edison. Eric Kutas added 12 points for Westminster (9-7, 1-1). Edison (11-6, 1-1) was led by Alvin Loftis who scored 22 points, including three three-point shots.
