The Barons, (11-7, 3-0), who trailed the Chargers (13-6, 1-2), 27-17, early in the third quarter, scored 14 straight points to take a 31-27 lead with two minutes left in the period. After Edison narrowed Fountain Valley’s lead to 31-29 on Wendy Sandstedt’s quarter-ending jumper, the Barons outscored the Chargers, 18-11, in the fourth period to clinch the victory.

“We started to play more like we’re capable of playing in the second half,” said Carol Strausburg, Fountain Valley coach. “We didn’t shoot well at all in the first half, and in the second half, our pressing defense really helped pick up things for us, along with our increased concentration.”

Said Edison Coach Randy Williams: “We took some shots we shouldn’t have taken in the second half. We just have to be more patient with the ball.”

“We played good defense in the first half,” Williams said. “We were able to keep their top scorers out of the game then, but in the second half, everything we tried failed.”
