Grant High held on to what remained of an 11-point halftime lead, then needed a three-point basket by Sean Watkins with six seconds left in regulation before edging Poly 64-62 in double overtime Friday night at Poly in an East Valley League game.

Poly scored the first three points of the final overtime but Grant scored the last six, four by Setro Terzian, who tapped in a rebound and made two free throws.

After the final buzzer, Watkins ran off the floor with both index fingers raised, departing with 16 points as Grant took a rocky road to its sixth win in a row. The Lancers are 11-2 overall and 3-0 in league play.

Poly dropped to 7-6, 0-3.

Shouting encouragement to his teammates the entire game, Poly captain Bobby Ntoya was overcome by the emotion at the end, tears rolling from his eyes as teammates hugged him.

“It’s really frustrating,” said Poly Coach Al Uyemura, whose team has lost by a total of 16 points in its first three league games. “But my kids are tough, they’ll make a comeback.”

Grant jumped out to a 30-19 halftime lead, using spurts of 12-2 and 14-2 to seemingly control the game.

Danny Enowitz scored 10 consecutive points in the first quarter, four on baskets after steals.

But Poly reeled off the first six points of the second half and pulled to within 38-36 on a jumper by Ntoya with a minute left in the third quarter.

Grant, however, scored six quick points, the last on a tip-in at the buzzer by Troy McLeod to take a 42-36 lead.

Poly began a second comeback after Enowitz, who finished with 22 points, fouled out with 3:17 left and Grant ahead, 51-45.

Poly then scored four points in a row before going ahead, 53-52, on a 10-foot jump shot by Nick Lymberopoulos, who finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

Poly’s Scott Cooper rattled in a 15-foot jumper with 18 seconds left in the first overtime to tie the score, 59-59.

Duke Snyder scored 16 points for Poly, 13 in the second half.
