Boys’ Roundup : Los Amigos Rallies Past Bolsa Grande

Los Amigos High School rallied from a 12-point deficit with 3 1/2 minutes left Wednesday night to beat Bolsa Grande, 66-65, in a Garden Grove League boys’ basketball game at Los Amigos.

The Lobos used a press and solid shooting to rally. Los Amigos was aided by a technical foul on Bolsa Grande that accounted for two free throws and a basket.

Carlos Palomino led the Lobos (7-9, 4-2) with 23 points, and teammate J.J. Jenkins, who fouled out with three minutes to go, scored 16.

Joe Small had 23 points for Bolsa Grande (11-5, 4-2).

In other Garden Grove League play:

Kennedy 73, Rancho Alamitos 69--Point guard Mike Pettengill set a school record for assists 16 for the Irish (10-6, 6-0). Garry Lira made five three-point shots in the last quarter for Rancho Alamitos (4-9, 3-3).

La Quinta 80, Pacifica 66--The Aztecs’ Kenny Bennett and Scott Campbell scored 34 and 25 points, respectively, to lead La Quinta (10-6, 3-3).

Greg White led Pacifica with 22 points.

Garden Grove 54, Santiago 46--Steve Sylvester had 15 points and Joe Squyers 13 for Garden Grove (3-13, 2-4) at Santiago. Leroy Fellows scored 19 points for Santiago (1-11, 0-6).

In the Century League:

Foothill 65, Villa Park 51--Dan Abel and Bill Mazurie each scored 13 points for Foothill (9-6, 2-1). Roger Branstine had 12 points for the Spartans (1-13, 0-3).

Santa Ana Valley 81, Canyon 64--The Falcons (10-7, 2-1) used a fullcourt press and a potent fast break to score 28 points in the first quarter. Falcon center Jason Vaughan led all scorers with 22 points. Brett Beale and Roshawn Lacy each scored 20 points for the Falcons.

Santa Ana 69, El Modena 51--The visiting Saints outscored El Modena by 25-12 in the first quarter and by 22-12 in the fourth. Bobby Joyce had 26 points and 23 rebounds and Scootie Lynwood had 12 assists for Santa Ana (16-3, 3-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Beach 62, Orange 51--The surprising Artists (6-8, 3-0) remained in a tie with Woodbridge for first place as guard John McKeown scored 16 points and sophomore John Pervino added 15 points. Kevin France led Orange (3-12, 0-3) with 16 points.

Woodbridge 60, Laguna Hills 54--Center Adam Keefe had 28 points and 19 rebounds to lead the Warriors (11-5, 3-0) at Laguna Hills. Laguna Hills (1-2 in league) was led by Chris Sheff who had 20 points.

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 69, Dana Hills 67--Dana Hills was down by two, 67-65, with 18 seconds left, but missed a couple of short shots. Mission Viejo got the rebound and added two free throws in the final seconds.

Tom Tkach led the Diablos (9-8, 2-1) with 18 points. John Lloyd led host Dana Hills (8-9, 1-2) with 23 points.

El Toro 69, San Clemente 43--Forward Eric Speaker scored 18 points to lead the Chargers (13-4, 2-1). Point guard Mike Peters led San Clemente (2-13, 0-3) with 10 points and 8 assists.

Capistrano Valley 40, Irvine 37--The upstart Vaqueros (8-10, 1-2) came close to scoring one of the biggest upsets of the season at Saddleback College. The top-ranked Cougars (15-4, 3-0) were paced by point guard Charles Lockard with 14 points.
