P. V. Wins a Rugged Game

After his team’s 2-1 victory Wednesday afternoon over West Torrance High School, Palos Verdes soccer Coach Al King felt a little like the King of the Jungle.

“It was a bit more like jungle-ball out there than we’d have liked,” King said after his Sea Kings remained unbeaten after four Bay League contests and improved to 16-10-2 overall. “The tensions were just so high.”

The loss dropped West to 12-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the Bay League.

Palos Verdes forward Jeff Bowers, who played in his first game after missing nine straight with a pulled back, scored the winning goal with 14 minutes left in the game. Bowers took a chest pass from center half Jim Miller in front of the goal and rolled it into the net.

Bowers’ clutch goal spoiled a dogged performance by West, which came back to tie the wild, physical game at 1-1 early in the second half. West’s Steve Jangaard beat two defenders and then fed the ball back to left halfback Andrew Igloi, who punched it into the net for the tying goal.

The game’s first goal was scored by Palos Verdes center forward Paul Kaemmerer, who took a neat crossing pass from Doug Kay and volleyed it into the net with his left foot.

“We’re snakebitten right now,” said West Coach Russell DeFord. “We just can’t get any luck going. We’re not off to a real good start in league.”
