Two Frosh Guards to Lead Lady Lions Against Portland and Gonzaga Cagers

Loyola Marymount’s women’s basketball team will play host to the University of Portland tonight and Gonzaga on Saturday in West Coast Athletic Conference action. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m. in Gersten Pavilion. The Lions are 11-6 overall and 1-1 in the WCAC. Freshman guards Kristen Bruich and Lynn Flanagan continue to pace the team in scoring with averages of 11.8 and 11.3. Forward Regan O’Hara is next at 8.6 and is the top rebounder at 6.8 per game.

The UCLA men’s volleyball team will compete in the 24-team UC Santa Barbara Classic today and Saturday. The Bruins, 7-0 and ranked second nationally, opened the season by winning the All-Cal Tournament at UC Santa Cruz, giving them a 33-match win streak. The Santa Barbara tournament includes No. 3 USC, No. 4 Hawaii and No. 8 Stanford.

Hermosa Beach will sponsor the 36th annual Sand and Strand Run on Feb. 7. The 8 a.m. race is open to Hermosa, Manhattan and Redondo Beach residents. The 9 a.m. race is open to all. The course, which is 55% sand and 45% Strand, is run between the Manhattan and Hermosa piers. Entry fee is $8 for pre-registration or $10 the day of the race. Proceeds will benefit the 1736 Family Crisis Center, which runs youth programs and helps victims of child abuse and domestic violence. The Inglewood YMCA will start basketball leagues for adults, youths and beginners in February. An instruction league for children in kindergarten through second grade will run for eight weeks and teach boys and girls basic skills. A youth league in four age groups from grade three through high school will begin Feb. 20, with team selections Jan. 30. An adult league will begin Feb. 16, with a registration deadline of Feb. 13.
