Sunset League : Marina Stops Fountain Valley Inside and Out, 56-41

After three weeks of Sunset League play, it’s clear that any boys’ basketball team can be beaten. Friday night was no exception as Marina High School knocked off Fountain Valley, 56-41, in front of 1,200 at Fountain Valley.

Marina, the 10th-ranked team in the Orange County Sportswriters Assn. poll, improved its record to 14-5 overall, 3-2 in the league. The victory moved the Vikings one game behind Ocean View in the league standings. The loss dropped Fountain Valley, the fifth-ranked team, into a second-place tie with Marina at 13-5, 3-2.

“This was a big win for us tonight,” said Marina Coach Steve Popovich. “But every win is big in this league.”

The Vikings received balanced scoring from their starters, with Steve Guild scoring most of his 17 points from the inside and David Yamate most of his 15 from outside.

Fountain Valley had trouble with its inside game all night and was outrebounded, 27-20. Kevin Andersen led all scorers with 18 points for the Barons, but he scored only 4 in the second half. Cherokee Parks, a 6-foot 9-inch freshman center, blocked five shots--all by Andersen--while grabbing 7 rebounds and scoring 9 points.

Marina opened up a 12-point lead, 28-16, with just under 3 minutes to play in the first half and was never seriously threatened.
