Area Roundup : Tom Curren to Surf in Team Contest at Huntington Beach

Two-time world champion Tom Curren will be among the 192 surfers competing in the Katin Memorial Team Challenge, which begins Thursday and runs through Feb. 7 at Huntington Beach.

The 12th tournament will feature 48 teams competing in four-man heats to earn team and individual points. On Feb. 7, the top eight teams will compete for the team championship.

Curren, of Santa Barbara, won the individual championship last year. The team title was won by Gotcha Dominators of Costa Mesa.

This year’s field will include Jim Hogan of Capistrano Beach, Richie Collins of Costa Mesa and Bud Llamas, Scott Farnsworth and Gary Clisby, all of Huntington Beach.

Soccer For Everyone Enterprises will hold tryouts for youths ages 16-19 at Saddleback College on Saturday and Feb. 6, both starting at 10 a.m.

Similar tryouts will be held throughout the state. Selected players will be trained at clinics, and the top players will play on three teams: boys’ under-19, boys’ under-16 and girls’ under-19.

The teams will compete in Sweden, Norway and Demark during the summer. The cost for the players will be $2800.

Soccer For Everyone also will hold a clinic for players ages 10-14 on Saturday at Saddleback College.

The fifth Spirit Run will be held Sunday at Newport Center’s Fashion Island. The 5-kilometer run is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. and the 10-kilometer run at 8:45 a.m.

Registration will be between 6 and 7:15 a.m. the day of the race and will cost $6 for the race or $13 for the race and a T-shirt. Proceeds will go to Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor high schools.

The sixth Canyon High School golf tournament will be held Feb. 10 at the Anaheim Hills Public Golf Course, starting at 10 a.m.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. and will cost $150 per person, with the proceeds benefiting the Canyon High baseball team. Featured in the tournament will be former Angels Bobby Grich and Rod Carew, as well as other major league and former major league players.

Players may sign up now for the fourth Winter Slo-Pitch tournament, which will be held Feb. 6 at Hart Park in Orange. Men’s C and D teams are eligible to participate.

The entry fee is $150 per team, with each team guaranteed to play at least four games.

Laurie Jones, a Huntington Beach High School volleyball player, has made an oral commitment to attend UCLA. Jones was named to The Times’ All-County team this past season. She also was the co-player of the year in the Sunset League and a member of the All-Southern Section 4-A team. Jones, who led the Oilers to the Sunset League championship, also was considering Pepperdine, USC, University of the Pacific, Hawaii, UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Long Beach. . . . Angel Wally Joyner will be honored as the Sportsman of the Year by the Children’s Hospital of Orange County at the seventh annual membership mixer on Feb. 9 at the Irvine Marriott. The mixer will begin at 6 p.m., with KNBC sportscaster Fred Roggin as master of ceremonies.
