THE PREPS : Girls’ Basketball Roundup : Estancia Edges Tustin on Lumpkin’s Basket

Patrice Lumpkin made an eight-foot baseline jump shot with one minute left Thursday night to give the Estancia High School girls’ basketball team a 42-41 victory over Tustin in a Sea View League game at Estancia.

Lumpkin scored 11 points and Shawna Newbern scored 13 for the Eagles (13-7, 4-2).

The Tillers (13-9, 5-1) had one chance to tie the score, but Jenny Perkins missed a jump shot with 25 seconds left and Estancia’s Debbie Keyes got the rebound. Perkins finished with 17 points to lead Tustin.

In another Sea View League game:

University 53, Saddleback 42--The host Trojans (9-8, 4-2) built a 10-0 lead and were never challenged. Junior center Shelley Davis had 26 points and 11 rebounds for University. Monica Walton scored 14 points for the Roadrunners (3-3 in league).

In the Century League

Canyon 57, Santa Ana 39--Lisa Iinio scored 15 points and Erken Brack 12 to lead the Comanches (5-1) at Santa Ana. The score was tied, 14-14, after the first quarter, but Canyon went on a 19-5 run in the second quarter, aided by six Santa Ana turnovers. Gracie Lopez had 16 points and Trina Bruce 12 for the Saints (8-7, 3-3).

Foothill 50, Santa Ana Valley 26--Three Knight players--Ashley Selman, Sandi Rasmussen and Tanya Foxe--scored 11 points apiece for host Foothill (11-8, 6-0). Foxe also had 10 rebounds. Francesca Rumps scored 9 points for Santa Ana Valley (6-12, 1-5), which trailed the entire game.

In the Express League:

Gethsemane Baptist 78, Claremont 18--Nicole Page scored 26 and Allison Swangle 22 to lead Gethsemane Baptist (7-2) at Long Beach. Mindy Moore scored six points for Claremont (2-11, 2-7).

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 56, Troy 48--Sabrina Welch had 17 points and 9 rebounds for the Indians (13-5, 5-1). Amber Haden scored 21 points for the Warriors.

In the Olympic League:

Valley Christian 54, Capistrano Valley Christian 22--Carrie Shannon scored six points to lead Capistrano Valley Christian (4-10, 1-7).

Ontario Christian 73, Orange Lutheran 43--Wendy Van Whyee scored 26 points and Julie Van Leeuwen 17 to lead the Knights (11-5, 5-1). Ontario Christian took a 25-8 first-quarter lead and was never challenged. Devon Coster had 12 points, Kim Clatt 11 and Pam Marty 10 for the Lancers (8-8, 4-4).

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 65, Magnolia 31--Tammy Blackburn scored 24 points and Aimee McDaniel added 13 to lead the top-ranked Wildcats (20-1, 6-0) at Magnolia. Dawn Borum scored 12 points for Magnolia, which was outscored, 28-16, at halftime.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Orange 45, Laguna Hills 38--Alicia East had 12 points and 15 rebounds, as Orange (8-6, 6-0) held off Laguna Hills in the fourth quarter. Laguna Hills pulled to within four, 36-32, with 2:48 left before Orange switched from a zone to a man-to-man defense and regained control. Kelly Madden scored 11 points and Penny Conkey 10 for the Panthers. Christi Grebel had 23 points for Laguna Hills (2-4 in league).

Woodbridge 59, Trabuco Hills 35--Randee Mahony scored 14 points and Kathy Millat 12 to lead Woodbridge (17-5, 5-1). Woodbridge led, 28-24, at halftime, but outscored the Mustangs, 31-11. Millat had 12 steals as Woodbridge’s fullcourt press bothered Trabuco Hills in the second half. Lisa Amato had 15 points to lead Trabuco Hills (4-14, 0-6).

In the Sunset League:

Fountain Valley 58, Ocean View 48--The Barons (13-7, 5-1) trailed, 37-36, after three quarters, but outscored the Seahawks, 22-11, in the final quarter. Fountain Valley’s Stacey Hisaka scored 9 of her 13 points in the fourth quarter. Kami Bigler led the Barons with 16 points. Jenny Sullivan scored 15 points and Melanie Green 14 for Ocean View (7-13, 1-5).

Huntington Beach 48, Westminster 40--Sheryl Reed scored 16 points and had 7 rebounds for Huntington Beach (12-7, 4-2) and Tami Chick had 14 points and 6 rebounds.

Guard Stefanie Pemper, who had six goalie saves in Huntington Beach’s afternoon soccer game against Fountain Valley before changing uniforms and joining the basketball team at 4:30 p.m., added 10 points.

Julie-Ann Johnston scored 14 points, including two three-point shots, and Bobbi Dutcher added 13 points for Westminster.
