Dave King, Laguna Hills High School’s third-year basketball coach, was fired Thursday, according to school officials.

Joe Reid, an assistant to King, was named the interim coach.

“The change was made in the best interest of the school and the program,” said Frank Manzo, an assistant principal.

Under King this season, the Hawks were 11-9 overall and 3-2 in the Pacific Coast League.

Reid was the varsity coach at Estancia the last three seasons and was an assistant there for seven years. Before that, he had been sophomore coach for eight years at Mission Viejo, where he still teaches.

“I was surprised,” Reid said. “The administration said they felt it was necessary to make the change. They didn’t give me any reasons.”
