College Basketball Roundup : Duncan Helps Syracuse Beat Providence, 92-71

Sophomore guard Earl Duncan came off the bench to score 19 points as Syracuse defeated Providence, 92-71, in a Big East game Tuesday night at Syracuse, N.Y.

Duncan helped the Orangemen break away from Providence in the first half with hot outside shooting.

Sophomore forward Derrick Coleman had 20 points and 19 rebounds, and Stephen Thompson scored 15 points for Syracuse, which defeated the Friars for the 17th straight time in league play.

The Orangemen are now 16-5 overall and 5-3 in the conference play; Providence is 9-10 and 3-5.

Maryland 78, Notre Dame 75--Freshman Brian Williams scored 18 points to help the Terrapins overcome David Rivers’ 27 points and hold off an Irish rally at South Bend, Ind.

With nine seconds left and the Terrapins (11-6) leading by four, Maryland’s Rudy Archer made two free throws to wrap up the win. The Irish are now 12-6.

BYU 72, Tulsa 57--Center Jim Usevitch scored 21 points and forward Jeff Chatman added 19 as the No. 3-ranked Cougars won at Provo, Utah, to improve to 16-0.

The Cougars, who came into the game leading the nation with a 56.4% shooting percentage, made 51% of their shots against the Hurricane (5-13).

Memphis St. 67, Tennessee St. 64--Rodney Douglas hit two free throws with five seconds remaining as the Tigers (12-7) won at Memphis.

Douglas’ free throws were Memphis State’s only points in the final five minutes of the game.

Dwight Boyd led the Tigers with 22 points. Anthony Mason had 23 for Tennessee State (9-9).

Washington St. 56, Idaho 43--Guard Harold Wright scored 14 points and forward Neil Evans had 14 rebounds at the Cougars (8-9) won a nonconference game at Pullman. Kenny Luckett scored 15 points for the Vandals (14-6).
