Camie Cohee’s layup at the buzzer gave the Edison High School girls’ basketball team a 49-47 Sunset League victory over Fountain Valley Thursday at Edison.

The loss dropped Fountain Valley (14-10 overall, 6-2 in league play) from a first-place tie with Marina in the league. Edison is 17-7, 5-3.

“We figured they would go for the last shot,” Edison Coach Randy Williams said. “We started in a zone and wanted to press a little and hope for a turnover. It ended up where we did get a turnover.”

Fountain Valley had a 47-45 lead with less than a minute left when Edison’s Stefanie Moorman scored on a strong move inside the key. Each team called a timeout with Fountain Valley in possession with 30 seconds remaining.

“I just wanted us to wait until nine (seconds left in the game) and then look for the open shot,” Fountain Valley Coach Carol Strausburg said.

Fountain Valley never found one as it lost control of the ball in the key. Cohee tipped the ball out of the mix-up and headed downcourt with four seconds left.

“Obviously we had no one for a safety,” Strausburg said.

Edison’s Wendy Sandstedt, a senior forward, led all scorers with 17 points. Cohee, Moorman, Krisden Tanabe and Debbie Fischer each had eight for Edison.

Edison broke open a close game by outscoring Fountain Valley, 13-3, in the first 3:57 of the second half. But Fountain Valley stalled the run by switching to a zone defense. A pair of baskets by Stacey Hisaka and one by Yvette Ybarra gave Fountain Valley the 47-45 lead before Moorman and Cohee brought Edison back.

Hisaka led Fountain Valley with 13 points, Ybarra scored 12 and Kami Bigler added 10.

Marina 67, Westminster 31--At Westminster, Dawn Charroin had 19 points and 11 rebounds, as host Marina (20-3, 7-1) clinched a Southern Section 4-A playoff berth. Liberty Brewster had 12 points and 8 rebounds and Kathy Stuppy had 10 points and 8 rebounds for Marina. Bobbi Dutcher scored eight points for Westminster (4-16, 0-8).
