Northridge Cancels Tennis Tournament

Cal State Northridge has cancelled its Valentine’s tennis tournament because of declining participation. The tournament was scheduled to begin Saturday.

Northridge tennis Coach Tony Davila said that last year’s event for A, B, C and D level players drew only about 100 participants and that their entry fees were not enough to pay for trophies, United States Tennis Assn. officials and other expenses. Pre-tournament signups this year indicated an even smaller turnout.

Davila said the dwindling number of tennis clubs in the Valley has contributed to the decline in tournament participation by adults because organizers have a difficult time publicizing events. Davila plans to meet with directors of adult tournaments so that the USTA can determine the best way to market the Northridge tournament next year.

“I’d love to have them if we could just break even,” Davila said. “I think there are a lot of people out there who want to play. We have to find a way to reach them.”
