Senior forward Chip Hanlon hit a baseline jumper with three seconds remaining to lift Edison High School to a 47-46 victory over Fountain Valley Friday in a Sunset League boys’ basketball game at Fountain Valley.

Hanlon and teammates Alvin Loftis and Mike Hunter were instrumental in leading the Chargers (14-9, 4-4) to the victory after trailing by as many as 13 points in the first half and 12 in the second half.

“We couldn’t drop anything in the first half,” Edison Coach Jon Borchert said. “Our team was lucky to be in the ballgame until our shooting improved.”

Fountain Valley (14-6, 4-4) opened a 32-19 halftime lead on the strength of guard Jim Borgquist and forward Tim Huke. Borgquist, who finished with a game-high 17 points, hit three three-point shots in the first half.

Fountain Valley went on a 7-2 run early in the second half, but scored only seven points the rest of the way as the Chargers played a tight man-to-man defense that shut down Fountain Valley’s inside game.

Hunter, who had 11 points for the Chargers, cut the lead to one (44-43) when he scored on a layup and was fouled by Borgquist. He made the free throw with about a minute and a half left.

Hanlon gave Edison its first lead of the game when he hit an inside jumper with 1:22 remaining. Borgquist returned the favor with 35 seconds to play, hitting a turnaround shot in the lane before Hanlon connected with the winning shot.

“I wanted to take the last shot,” Hanlon said. “The play was designed so Dirk Paul could penetrate the lane and find an opening. I was happy he got the pass inside to me.”

Loftis finished with 13 points for Edison and Huke had 13 for Fountain Valley.
