Community College Basketball : Silva Scores 25 as Cypress Beats OCC

Vicky Silva scored a game-high 25 points to lead Cypress College to a 74-62 victory over Orange Coast in an Orange Empire Conference women’s basketball game Friday at Orange Coast.

Silva, a freshman guard from Fullerton High, was 10 of 18 from the field and also had 7 steals.

Orange Coast led most of the first half, but Cypress closed in the final two minutes to take a 36-31 lead. Cypress made 14 of 22 shots in the second half to prevent an OCC comeback.

Cypress was 30 of 56 from the field for the game. OCC also shot well, 27 of 49 from the field but only 8 of 18 from the free-throw line.

Becky Wayland added 14 points and Jeanette Dorsey 12 for Cypress (19-7, 6-0), which has a two-game lead over second-place OCC with four games left in conference.

Kim Ellerman scored 20 points and Gilly Powell 15 for OCC (13-13, 4-2). Ellerman fouled out with five minutes left.

In another Orange Empire Conference game:

Citrus 67, Saddleback 43--Debbie Johannson and Chris Hardy scored 14 points each to lead Citrus (13-13, 2-4), which had four players score in double figures at Saddleback. Anna Harmon’s 22 points and 18 rebounds led Saddleback (7-15, 0-6). Julia Monaghan added 14 points and 12 rebounds for Saddleback, which had only five players for the game.

In a South Coast Conference game:

Golden West 98, El Camino 49--Jeannine Battaglia scored 14 points and became the sixth player to score more than 1,000 points in a career for host Golden West. Battaglia, a sophomore guard out of Westminster High School, has 1,002 points in her career. She is 6th on the all-time list and the only guard in the top 10. Jill Guthrie (1982-83) holds the college’s career scoring record with 1,313.

It was the 25th consecutive victory for Golden West, which opened a 41-16 halftime lead. Golden West (26-1, 10-0) then went on a 23-0 run in the first seven minutes of the second half to take a 64-16 lead. Stephanie Swanson led Golden West with 16 points, Jane Utu had 14, Kris Takyama 11 and Shawna Armstrong 10. Golden West is the state’s top-ranked team.

In a South Coast Conference men’s game:

El Camino 97, Golden West 83--Kirkland Howling scored 26 points and Charles White added 22 to lead El Camino, the top-ranked team in Southern California.

Markus Muller-Stach, who leads Golden West in scoring with a 17-point a game average, was held to 6 points. Anthony Howard led Golden West (13-13, 3-6) El Camino is 24-4, 7-2.
