College Baseball Roundup : SDSU Tops Riverside on Sacrifice Fly in Eighth

Jeff Barry’s eighth-inning sacrifice fly to center field scored pinch-runner Robbie Bailey with the winning run Saturday as San Diego State edged UC Riverside, 4-3.

SDSU (1-1) scored once in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings, but Riverside (1-4) rallied for three in the eighth. The big hit was Matt Beltran’s two-out, two-run double.

Billy Miller led off SDSU’s eighth with a single, and Bailey took his place. Steve Montejano blooped a single to right field, and Jeff Champ sacrificed Bailey to third and Montejano to second. Barry then delivered the winning run.

In the ninth, Riverside had runners on second and third with one out, but SDSU’s Scott Webb struck out Jeff Goodale and Logan Ostrander to end the game.

Scott Webb (1-0) picked up the victory in relief.

Cal Poly Pomona 7, USD 4--Dave Rolls hit his third home run in three days, but it wasn’t enough as the University of San Diego suffered its third straight loss at home.

Cal Poly Pomona (2-2) scored three runs in the first inning, but USD (0-3) answered with three in the second on Rolls’ home run and Rick Doane’s two-run double.

After trading runs in the fifth, Pomona took the lead for good in the seventh on Bryan Grier’s two-run double into the gap in right-center field.

UCLA 12, USIU 3--Host U.S. International had only two hits off UCLA’s Scott Schanz.

USIU starter Roddy Wilburn (0-1) gave up 6 runs in 3 innings. USIU (1-1) had solo home runs from Ron Sargent and Ray Plantier.

UCLA (5-0) was led by Jeff Osborn, who was 4 for 5, including a solo home run and 3 RBIs. UCLA catcher John Dolak was 2 for 2 including a three-run home run.
