Point Loma Nazarene Women Top Biola After 32 Years of Trying

Four players scored in double figures as the Point Loma Nazarene College women’s basketball team defeated Biola, 62-41, in an NAIA District III game Saturday at Point Loma. The win was the first for Point Loma Nazarene over Biola in 32 years.

Shelly Stokes led Point Loma Nazarene (16-7, 6-4) with 19 points. Ann Duffy (18), Shannon Anderson (12) and Laura Mars (10) also scored in double figures.

Biola (6-13, 4-6) had 25 turnovers to Point Loma Nazarene’s 11.

Coach Kathy Marpe won her 200th career game as the University of San Diego defeated Portland, 65-61, in a West Coast Athletic Conference game at USD. Karen Skemp had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Jane Gilpin had 12 points and 5 assists for USD (8-13, 4-3). Portland is 12-8 and 6-2.

Jessica Haynes scored 18 points to lead four players in double figures as San Diego State (16-5, 8-3) defeated UC Santa Barbara, 78-39, in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game at Santa Barbara. Brooke Meadows and Chana Perry added 16 points each for the Aztecs and Stephanie Lamar had 12.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Brad Smidt scored 22 points as Westmont College (13-8, 5-3) defeated Point Loma Nazarene (7-16, 1-7), 70-61, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game at Point Loma Nazarene.

Reid Gettys scored 38 points as Athletes in Action (22-8) defeated Christian Heritage College, 109-106, at Grossmont College. Bill Soucie led Christian Heritage (11-11) with 20 points.

HOCKEY

Kip Miller scored at the 9:16 mark of the second period to give Michigan State the lead for good in a 6-2 college hockey victory over U.S. International (15-13) at East Lansing, Mich.

FOOTBALL

Torrey Pines High School’s Tim Walker has made an oral commitment to play football at Vanderbilt University.

Walker, a 5-foot 11-inch, 191-pound running back, chose Vanderbilt over California, Arizona, Oregon and the Naval Academy. Walker rushed for 914 yards and caught 23 passes for 402 yards for Torrey Pines in 1987.
